Chemical Spill in Weatherford Prompts Evacuation

Date:

Following a truck accident, a dangerous chemical spill occurred, prompting the evacuation of a town with emergency responders on the scene.

Approximately 1,000 residents in Weatherford, located just west of Oklahoma City, are being moved out of their homes due to a truck collision that resulted in the release of a hazardous substance. As a consequence, at least 36 individuals have been hospitalized due to exposure, with authorities cautioning that the air quality in the vicinity is unsafe.

The incident took place at approximately 10 pm local time on Wednesday, with emergency alerts disseminated about an hour later. Witnesses observed individuals in gas masks going door-to-door to wake up residents. Krystal Blackwell, one of the evacuees, mentioned that emergency personnel were knocking on doors while wearing gas masks.

“It was quite surreal to wake up to,” Blackwell shared with local media from her car in pajamas. “I almost thought it was a dream.”

Mike Karlin, the Emergency Manager of Weatherford, expressed that adverse weather conditions have hindered the cleanup efforts. “Regrettably, we are experiencing calm weather conditions,” he stated. “We require wind to aid in dispersing the substance, along with heat to facilitate its dissipation.”

One resident described detecting a “strong, spicy odor” in his residence after the chemical incident in Weatherford.

“There was this spicy, pungent smell,” a local resident informed News9.com. “Upon leaving the room, we noticed others coughing as well. It was evident that something was amiss.”

Another individual stated, “I could smell it even though my door was shut, so it wasn’t an overpowering toxic scent in the room. But I could sense that something was off.”

Authorities were alerted to a potential tanker leakage at a Holiday Inn Express parking lot, as relayed by Mike Karlin, the Emergency Manager.

Upon arrival at the scene, responders discovered a chemical spill and individuals exhibiting signs of respiratory distress.

Following the chemical spill, at least 36 individuals were promptly transported to hospitals for treatment.

At 10 pm local time on Wednesday, a truck collision occurred, causing ammonia leakage and necessitating public emergency alerts.

Law enforcement cautioned about the hazardous air quality in the vicinity, emphasizing that at least 36 people have been admitted to hospitals due to exposure.

Schools in Weatherford have been shut down, and Southwest Oklahoma State University announced the cancellation of classes for the day in response to the chemical incident.

An emergency notice advised: “Partial evacuation of the City of Weatherford due to a chemical spill at Holiday Inn Express. Residents are to evacuate north to Davis Ave and between Washington Ave to Lyle Rd. Safety location is at Pioneer Cellular Center (SWOSU Basketball Gym).

“If experiencing medical symptoms, call 911, or seek medical assistance at Ace Hardware.”
