Celebrated Drummer Gilson Lavis, 74, Passes Away

Date:

An esteemed drummer known for his performances with Squeeze and Jools Holland’s band has passed away at the age of 74. Gilson Lavis, the talented musician, was commemorated by his longtime friend Jools, 67, who announced the sad news on social media.

Lavis gained prominence in the 1970s as the drummer for the popular rock group Squeeze, recognized for their hits like Cool for Cats, Up the Junction, and Labelled with Love. He joined the band after responding to a newspaper advertisement.

Following a breakup in the 1980s, Squeeze reunited in 1985 but disbanded again in 1999. The band made a remarkable comeback in 2007, embarking on tours in the UK and US and subsequently releasing two albums, Cradle to the Grave in 2015 and The Knowledge in 2017. After retiring from drumming last year, Lavis became part of Jools Holland’s Rhythm and Blues Orchestra.

Jools shared the news of Gilson’s passing on his Instagram page, expressing his sorrow and extending condolences to Gilson’s wife, Nikki, and son. Fans flooded social media with tributes, expressing gratitude for Gilson’s musical contributions and lamenting his loss.

Apart from his musical talents, Lavis was also a dedicated artist, nurturing his passion while on tour. Despite attempting to retire from the music scene, he found himself drawn back in by opportunities to perform with Jools Holland. Gilson met his wife Nikki, the founder of the Pinchbeck Tappers, while she was working as a PA for Jools Holland.

Gilson Lavis leaves behind his wife Nikki and their son, both named Gilson. The music industry mourns the loss of a talented drummer and artist who left an indelible mark on the world of music.
