A bus crashed into a low bridge this evening, causing significant damage to the vehicle as its roof was torn off, scattering debris onto the street.
The incident took place around 7:45 pm in Bolton when a bus from the Bee Network, operated by Go North West, collided with the low bridge on Weston Street. Fortunately, there were no passengers on board during the accident, and the driver escaped without serious injuries.
The low bridge, situated in the Burnden area south of Bolton town center, has a height of 3.7 meters and is clearly marked as a ‘low bridge’. The bus was on its way back to the depot at the time of the collision, as stated by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM).
Greater Manchester Police responded to the scene, closing the road to facilitate the removal of the bus and clear the wreckage. Images from the incident depict extensive damage to the bus, with its roof completely detached and lying on the road, according to reports from Manchester Evening News.
A spokesperson from TfGM mentioned, “At approximately 7:45 pm tonight, an out-of-service bus collided with a low bridge on Weston Street in Bolton, resulting in significant damage to the vehicle’s roof.”
“The bus, operated by Go North West, was returning to the depot without passengers onboard at the time of the incident,” the spokesperson added. “We are collaborating with the police to address the immediate situation and will closely investigate the circumstances leading to the collision.”
In a separate incident earlier in the day, emergency services rushed to an Edinburgh street after a pedestrian was hit by a tram. The 66-year-old man sustained injuries, prompting the closure of Constitution Street at the junction with Queen Charlotte Street. The incident occurred near The Shore tram stop, and the road was reopened later in the afternoon.
