A British woman who went missing from a beach in Greece has been confirmed to have died from drowning, according to authorities.
Michele Bourda, 59, disappeared in Kavala, Greece on August 1 while her husband, Chris, 66, was asleep on Ofrynio beach. Her belongings were left on the beach, and when Chris woke up, she was nowhere to be found. The couple, from Glasgow, were on a two-week holiday and had gone for a swim before taking a nap on nearby sun loungers.
Chris informed that police located Michele’s body on a small island called Fidonisi, approximately 40km from where she was last seen, around a month after her disappearance.
Greek police investigation concluded that foul play was not involved, stating that Michele likely died as a result of drowning. She was initially identified by the tankini she wore when she vanished.
Her body was found without a head, partially clothed, and partially consumed by fish. Forensic scientist Nikos Kifnidis stated that there were no other injuries and confirmed that drowning was the cause of death.
Chris expressed devastation upon the identification of Michele’s body, emphasizing the tragic circumstances of her demise. He criticized the police for their handling of the investigation, citing delays and lack of urgency.
Chris recalled the last moments he spent with Michele and mentioned her history of depression and anxiety. He also revealed his dissatisfaction with the response from Greek authorities and recounted his efforts to seek help when he realized Michele was missing.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) mentioned their support for the family in light of the incident.
