“British grandmother freed from Bali prison after £1.6M drug case”

Date:

The final days of a British grandmother serving time in a Bali prison for smuggling cocaine worth £1.6 million have been disclosed. Lindsay Sandiford, 69, was imprisoned in Bali’s Kerobokan jail and initially faced a death sentence by firing squad for drug trafficking in 2012. Sandiford, who was coerced by a drug syndicate, endured harsh conditions in the jail for over a decade until a humanitarian release agreement was negotiated by Keir Starmer and Indonesian authorities.

Images from the prison captured the elderly woman’s last moments before she departed on a UK government-funded flight back to the UK. Upon her return, Sandiford, in fragile health, was embraced by pastor Christine Buckingham, who provided support during her imprisonment. Sandiford, suffering from diabetes and hypertension, requires medical attention upon her arrival in the UK.

Following a treaty signing between British and Indonesian officials, Sandiford left the Kerobokan jail amidst onlookers. She arrived at London Heathrow Airport, where she was photographed in a wheelchair shielding her face from cameras. Indonesian authorities suggest that she may face further imprisonment in the UK, although the Foreign Office has not confirmed this. Sandiford was released alongside another UK national as part of a repatriation agreement signed by Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper after extensive negotiations.

Officials from Indonesia praised the repatriation process as a demonstration of the country’s commitment to international legal cooperation.
