Blind Survivor Recounts Bear Attack Ordeal

Date:

A man who was attacked by a bear has shared his terrifying experience of realizing moments before the animal severely injured him. Dan Bigley narrowly escaped death when a large brown bear dragged him into the bushes and repeatedly bit his head, causing him to lose consciousness. Despite his skull being cracked by the bear’s sharp teeth, his brain remained unharmed by mere millimeters of luck.

Dan, who lost his sight during the attack, vividly recounted the life-altering moment when he thought he was facing death. The incident occurred over two decades ago while he was walking in the forest with a friend named Jana after a day of fishing in Alaska, where they encountered the bear unexpectedly.

Coastal Alaska is home to massive brown bears, known to reach heights exceeding 9 feet and weighing up to 1,500 pounds. These bears possess surprising agility and speed, capable of running up to 35 to 40mph over short distances, outpacing the average human.

Although Dan had encountered bears in the wild previously, he sensed the unusual aggression of this particular bear. As they tried to retreat, the bear attacked Dan, revealing her protective instinct over her hidden cubs nearby. Despite Dan’s attempt to evade the bear by jumping into the bushes, he was caught and viciously mauled.

Recalling the horrifying ordeal, Dan described the moment of realizing that he was the one emitting pitiful screams akin to a dying animal. The bear sank her teeth into his head, inflicting severe injuries that led him in and out of consciousness during the attack.

After mistakenly assuming Dan was dead, the bear eventually walked away, leading to his rescue by Jana and local fishermen who provided assistance until emergency services transported him to the hospital. Dan suffered severed arteries during the attack, initially deemed as life-threatening by doctors. Following a prolonged surgery and coma, he embarked on a challenging journey to recovery.

Despite working as a recreational therapist for children, Dan was deeply affected by the traumatic incident. Reflecting on his experience, he shared the lasting impact it left on his life and mental well-being. Currently residing in Anchorage, Alaska, with his family, Dan co-authored a book in 2013 detailing his journey of resilience and rediscovery after the life-altering bear attack.

Through therapy and personal growth, Dan found solace in sharing his story, emphasizing the resilience and growth that emerged from his adversity. His narrative encapsulates moving beyond the bear, illustrating how embracing life’s opportunities can overshadow past traumas and disabilities, leading to a fulfilling and enriching existence.
