“Over 1 Million Missing Out on Monthly £441 Benefit”

Date:

As many as 1.1 million individuals might be overlooking the opportunity to apply for Attendance Allowance, a benefit that could provide up to £441 per month. Policy in Practice has released new data, encouraging individuals to explore potential entitlements to this benefit. Attendance Allowance is granted to individuals above state pension age who require extra assistance or supervision due to a disability or illness.

Eligibility for Attendance Allowance is possible if daily tasks are time-consuming, painful, or uncomfortable, and if the condition necessitates assistance for at least six months. The allowance amounts to £73.90 per week if daytime supervision or support is needed, or £110.40 per week if assistance is required both during the day and at night, or if the individual is approaching the end of life.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) disburses Attendance Allowance every four weeks, with payments totaling either £295.60 or £441.60 per period. It is important to note that having a caregiver is not a prerequisite for eligibility. Individuals can utilize the allowance for services like transportation or cleaning to maintain independence, but any changes in circumstances should be promptly reported to the DWP.

Attendance Allowance is not means-tested, allowing individuals to have unlimited savings. It is tax-free and exempt from benefit caps. Receiving Attendance Allowance may also lead to increased benefits from other sources. However, individuals already receiving Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or Disability Living Allowance (DLA) are ineligible for Attendance Allowance.

In Scotland, Attendance Allowance has been replaced by Pension Age Disability Payment. To apply for Attendance Allowance, individuals can either mail the claim form to Freepost DWP Attendance Allowance or contact the Attendance Allowance helpline for assistance. The application process involves detailing how the illness or disability impacts daily life and providing supporting documents such as medical records or care plans.

Some applicants may undergo assessments before receiving Attendance Allowance, except in cases of terminal illness where the higher rate is immediately granted.
