A sanitation worker has issued an urgent plea to homeowners regarding a common error that is “tainting your waste bin.” Dubbed the ‘UK’s No1 BINfluencer,’ the individual has turned to TikTok to spotlight a mistake many residents are committing.
The waste collection professional has implored the public by stating: “When using your bin, please remove food from its packaging before disposal.
“I understand that you may have forgotten about those wraps at the back of your cupboard, and now they are about two months past their expiration date.
“Take them out of the plastic wrapping and place them in your food waste container. Although it may produce a slight odor, by not doing so, you are essentially contaminating your bin.
“Discard the packaging. Biodegradable bags are available. Some local councils allow the use of paper bags.”
While recognizing that some local authorities accept loose food waste, he emphasized that utilizing suitable bags helps avoid unpleasant smells and reduces the need for frequent bin cleaning.
The TikTok content creator also shared some interesting insights about the holiday season. He mentioned: “During Christmas, some individuals wrapped their turkey in foil.
“That’s not appropriate for disposal. Therefore, please place food waste in a bag for a hassle-free experience. Your bin will be collected, and you won’t have to deal with food waste for another week.”
In the comments section, some people expressed their reluctance to dispose of food directly into a bin without a bag, with one commenter stating: “Isn’t that just common sense? I always follow this practice.”
However, it appears otherwise, with the leading waste management expert responding: “One would expect so.”
Recently, it was reported that significant changes are being implemented for waste collection in England, introducing four bins for all households, with initial steps of the new plan set to commence as early as March. Further details on this update can be found here.
