A new security threat named Sturnus has been identified by Threat Fabric, targeting Android users of popular messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal. This banking Trojan, discovered by MTI Security researchers, allows hackers to remotely control devices, monitor user activities, and carry out fraudulent transactions.
Sturnus can intercept and view private messages, steal banking credentials, and take over the entire device, posing a significant risk to users’ privacy and financial security. The malware is designed to bypass encrypted messaging services, making it a potent threat to unsuspecting users.
Although Sturnus is currently in its early stages of deployment and not widespread, users are advised to remain vigilant. If the malware is distributed on a larger scale, it could potentially impact millions of Android users.
Threat Fabric warns that Sturnus is a sophisticated threat capable of executing various attacks, such as credential theft, keylogging, screen streaming, and device administrator abuse. To safeguard against such threats, users are urged to download apps only from the official Google Play Store, avoid sideloading software, and check app reviews before installation.
While Sturnus is a newly discovered threat, its advanced capabilities emphasize the importance of taking proactive measures to protect personal data and devices from cyber attacks.
