“Bud Crawford in Police Controversy”

Date:

Recently, Terence “Bud” Crawford, the newly crowned world super middleweight boxing champion, found himself in a contentious situation when police stopped him in Omaha, NE, on suspicion of reckless driving during the early hours of Saturday. The boxer and three passengers were removed from the vehicle at gunpoint after law enforcement noticed a firearm, which belonged to one of Crawford’s companions, on the car floor.

Crawford, who was in town to celebrate his 38th birthday and recent victory over Canelo Alvarez in Las Vegas, was promptly recognized by the officers. Omaha Mayor John Ewing and Police Chief Todd Schmaderer acknowledged a video circulating on social media regarding the incident and announced an internal affairs investigation.

Police shared that officers observed a vehicle driving recklessly downtown and conducted a traffic stop where they discovered a firearm inside the vehicle. All four occupants were asked to exit the vehicle for safety reasons. Crawford, upon presenting his driver’s license, was cited for reckless driving. One of Crawford’s security team members was also lawfully carrying a firearm.

It was confirmed that all occupants had legal permits to carry firearms. Responding to Crawford’s request, a police supervisor and lieutenant arrived at the scene. Ewing emphasized the importance of trust between law enforcement and the community, supporting a thorough internal investigation to ensure transparency.

Qasim Shabazz, the head of Crawford’s security team, expressed fear during the incident, stating they felt their lives were in jeopardy, especially when the officer reacted strongly upon discovering the firearm.
