A waste collector in the UK is urging people to avoid placing certain items in recycling bins due to the mess it creates. Failure to follow this advice could lead to accumulation of garbage. Known as Ashley online, under the handle @Theno1.binman on TikTok, he emphasized the problems caused by shredded paper in bins, stating it becomes a nuisance for waste collectors. Shredded paper is challenging to recycle as it disintegrates too much, making it costly and labor-intensive. When tipped, especially in adverse weather conditions, it scatters, requiring extensive clean-up efforts.
Ashley advised against placing shredded paper in paper bins, suggesting disposal in regular waste instead. While some UK councils accept shredded paper in recycling bins if contained, using bags like Primark’s made of recyclable material is recommended. Standard carrier bags are not suitable for recycling due to being categorized as “soft plastics,” which can disrupt sorting machinery. Many supermarkets offer designated recycling points for these types of bags.
To effectively manage shredded paper waste and reduce landfill contributions, alternative disposal methods include enclosing it in paper envelopes or cardboard cereal boxes, as suggested by Google. Reusing shredded paper for purposes like composting or animal bedding is another eco-friendly option. However, individuals should verify their local council’s guidelines, as not all facilities accept shredded paper, even when properly contained.
In a recent alert ahead of Easter, the waste collector cautioned that common mistakes with disposing of Easter egg packaging could result in councils refusing to collect rubbish. Incorrect placement of items in bins may lead to contamination issues, causing the entire bin to be left uncollected to avoid jeopardizing other waste on the truck.
