“Beaverbrooks and Home Bargains Lead Trend of Store Closures for Employee Well-being”

Date:

Beaverbrooks, a popular high street jewellery chain, has announced the closure of all 83 of its stores on Boxing Day, with staff receiving an extra week of pay as a gesture of appreciation. This practice has become a yearly tradition for Beaverbrooks, allowing employees to enjoy a well-deserved break following their hard work throughout the year. Additionally, the family-run business has recently hired 50 seasonal workers for various roles in its head office and selected stores.

Founded in 1919 by the Adlestone brothers Isaac, Harry, and Maurice, Beaverbrooks originated with its first shop in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Managing Director Anna Blackburn emphasized the company’s commitment to prioritizing its staff’s well-being, stating that providing time off for relaxation and family bonding is essential for maintaining a motivated and dedicated workforce. Blackburn hopes that Beaverbrooks’ employee-centric approach will inspire other businesses to follow suit.

In a similar move, Home Bargains has also decided to close its stores on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, continuing a practice initiated in recent years to allow its hard-working staff a well-earned respite. The retailer will keep all outlets shut on Christmas Day as well, as part of its commitment to employee welfare.

Other major retailers, such as M&S and Aldi, have also confirmed store closures on Boxing Day. M&S started this practice in 2020 to acknowledge the dedication of its staff during the Covid pandemic, while Aldi plans to close its doors on both Christmas and New Year’s Day. These decisions reflect a growing trend among retailers to prioritize employee happiness and work-life balance during the festive season.

As the holiday season approaches, many companies are recognizing the importance of giving their employees time off to recharge and spend quality time with loved ones. This shift towards a more employee-centric approach underscores the value that businesses place on their workforce’s well-being and morale.
