France Collision Leaves Five Injured, Driver Attempts Arson

Date:

Five individuals sustained injuries following a collision with a vehicle in France on Wednesday. The driver, a 35-year-old French national, then tried to ignite the car, as per French media reports. During his apprehension, he reportedly exclaimed “Allahu Akbar” (“God is greatest”), according to the public prosecutor for La Rochelle.

A 22-year-old woman and a 69-year-old cyclist, among those struck, are currently in critical condition, local sources indicate. Authorities have ruled out terrorism as a motive, attributing the driver’s actions to “psychiatric issues,” as stated by the public prosecutor.

Numerous political figures have commented on the incident. Philippe Ballard, a National Assembly member, expressed solidarity with the victims and law enforcement. Manuel Bompard, another National Assembly member, extended wishes for the recovery of the injured. Manon Aubry, a Member of the European Parliament, conveyed sympathy to the victims and praised the efforts of public servants.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez visited the scene and commended the swift response of emergency personnel. The driver, known for previous criminal activities related to substance abuse, was not flagged in anti-terrorism databases, according to investigators.

Despite the driver’s declaration of “Allahu Akbar,” officials have not classified the incident as terrorism but initiated a criminal probe for “attempted murder.” The National Rally leader condemned the violent act, expressing concern for the injured individuals.

A breathalyzer test on the driver yielded negative results for alcohol consumption, confirmed a local police spokesperson. The suspect, with a history of minor offenses related to substance abuse, resides alone in a mobile home.

Photographs of the burnt-out vehicle used in the attack have been released. Emergency services swiftly responded to the scene, containing the situation. The driver, a local resident, was apprehended close to the attack site.

Local authorities are managing the situation, with a focus on the well-being of the injured victims. The suspect’s reported psychiatric challenges and substance abuse issues are under investigation. The serene Ile d’Oléron, a popular tourist destination, faces this unexpected tragedy with resilience.

Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed the critical condition of two victims and the injuries sustained by three others. An ongoing investigation is in progress, with the driver in police custody. Authorities continue to assess the incident, prioritizing the well-being of those affected.
