Investment Firm Contemplating Sale of Alpine F1 Stake

Date:

An investment firm that introduced numerous sports celebrities to Formula 1 as co-owners of the Alpine team is reportedly considering selling its share. Otro Capital, part of a consortium that acquired almost a quarter of the Enstone-based squad in 2023, is contemplating divesting its stake.

Renowned Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, who own Wrexham AFC, along with other notable figures like Rory McIlroy and Anthony Joshua, were part of this investment. Additionally, football stars Juan Mata and Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Super Bowl champions Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were involved in the ownership structure.

Despite the star-studded investors, Otro Capital may not retain its ownership stake for the long term, as per Sports Business Journal reports of preliminary discussions on selling their share in the Alpine team. The team had a value of around £685 million at the time of the investment, reflecting the growing popularity of F1 globally and the resultant rise in team valuations.

Red Bull Racing reportedly rejected a substantial offer for its junior team, Racing Bulls, while mid-field team Haas turned down multiple lucrative offers this year. If Otro decides to sell, they could profit significantly from their initial £165 million investment made in 2023, although talks of a sale are not advanced.

It is uncertain whether Reynolds, McElhenney, or RedBird Capital Partners are contemplating a sale. Alpine’s current performance places them at the bottom of the constructors’ championship with only 20 points for the season, significantly lower than Sauber, the team directly above them.

Alpine’s lackluster performance this year was partially due to focusing resources on the 2026 season instead of car development. They plan to race with new Mercedes power units next season to replace the underperforming Renault engines.

The 2026 driver lineup for Alpine is yet to be announced, with Pierre Gasly already confirmed for next season. Franco Colapinto’s future with the team remains uncertain, with rumors suggesting a possible announcement before the Brazilian Grand Prix next weekend.

Sky has discounted its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, offering savings of £192 and over 1,400 live matches across various leagues. The upcoming season will feature at least 215 live Premier League games, an increase from previous seasons.
