Trump Seeks $15B from New York Times

Date:

The President of the United States has announced his intention to file a lawsuit against the New York Times, seeking $15 billion for what he perceives as defamation and libel.

Donald Trump has expressed his desire to pursue legal action against the newspaper for the substantial amount, approximately £11 billion, alleging that they have been engaged in a pattern of false accusations and character assassination against him. Through his social media platform, Truth Social, he claimed that the publication has become a platform for the Radical Left Democrat Party.

In a recent post, he highlighted the newspaper’s endorsement of Kamala Harris, emphasizing its prominent placement on the front page, which he deemed unprecedented. Additionally, he accused various media outlets and TV programs of tarnishing his reputation through sophisticated manipulation of documents and visuals.

In a previous legal attempt in 2023, a judge dismissed his lawsuit against the New York Times, where he had sought $100 million from the publication and his niece, Mary Trump, for allegedly orchestrating a scheme to obtain his tax records. This lawsuit, initiated in 2021, was related to an award-winning investigative series on Trump’s financial dealings. Trump also faced defeat in another defamation case in 2023, when he tried to sue CNN for $475 million for comparing him to Adolf Hitler.

The lawsuit filed in the US District Court in Florida targets multiple articles and a book authored by two journalists from the publication, published before the 2024 election. Trump alleges that these pieces are part of a longstanding campaign by the New York Times to intentionally defame him. The legal document asserts that the defendants published false statements either negligently, with knowledge of their falsehood, or with blatant disregard for the truth.
