A serious accident on the M4 has led to the closure of the major motorway this morning, resulting in extensive traffic jams during peak rush hour.
Both directions of the motorway are closed following a vehicle overturn near Bridgend, compounded by another broken-down vehicle near the Prince of Wales bridge, causing significant disruption.
South Wales Police confirmed their presence at the crash site and advised the public to avoid the area due to increasing traffic congestion.
Traffic conditions on the M4 are gradually improving as lanes have reopened, following the completion of emergency repairs by National Highways.
Emergency repairs on two lanes of the Prince of Wales bridge have caused delays of up to 30 minutes for drivers, with National Highways addressing an infrastructure issue.
Highways England announced the reopening of lane 2 on the M4, providing some relief to motorists, while lane 1 remains closed due to an infrastructure defect in eastbound Gloucestershire.
Traffic England reported delays of nearly an hour on the M4, with congestion causing 40-minute delays compared to normal traffic flow, with expectations of returning to regular conditions around 10.30-10.45am.

Traffic buildup is rapidly increasing along various points of the M4, particularly congested between Junction 36 A4061 and Junction 35 A473, as well as on the Prince of Wales bridge from Junction 23 M48 to Junction 22 M49.
