“Death Row Inmate Criticizes Last Meal: No SpaghettiOs”

Date:

A man on Death Row, Thomas Grasso, expressed dissatisfaction with his final meal that included a variety of dishes such as mussels, clams, a cheeseburger, spare ribs, pie, and more. Grasso, who was convicted of two murders, including that of an 87-year-old woman in Oklahoma and an 81-year-old man in New York, was executed by lethal injection on March 20, 1995.

Despite the extensive meal he consumed, Grasso used his last words to complain about not receiving the specific food he had requested, namely SpaghettiOs with meatballs. He emphasized this issue to the press shortly before his death.

Following his critique of the meal, Grasso passed away at 1:22 am. Prior to his food-related comment, he made additional remarks, including a quote from T.S. Eliot and reciting a poem called A Visit with Mystery verbatim.

The public has continued to ponder Grasso’s meal choice over the years, with some questioning the rationale behind providing elaborate last meals to individuals facing execution. This debate has led to some states reconsidering honoring such requests due to concerns about extravagant demands from Death Row inmates.

In a contrasting approach, another Death Row inmate, Keith Edmund Gavin, opted for a simpler last meal consisting of Mountain Dew and ice cream from a prison vending machine before his execution in 2024. This decision stood in contrast to the extravagant last meal choice of another inmate, Derrick Ryan Dearman, who indulged in a seafood platter before his own lethal injection.
