Sky Q has maintained its dominance in the TV market for over a decade, remaining a favorite among UK viewers. Its extensive recording capabilities have been a key factor in its enduring popularity. However, a potential new competitor may soon emerge, offering similar features without requiring any subscription fees.
Freely, a built-in feature in many new televisions, enables users to access live and on-demand content without the need for an aerial, streaming everything directly to the screen via the web.
Although initially limited to purchasing a new TV to access Freely, a change is on the horizon. The team behind Freely, also responsible for Freeview, has revealed plans to introduce a dedicated set-top box that can be connected to existing TVs. The first of these Freely set-top boxes, manufactured by Humax, has been identified online.
The Humax device not only provides access to free TV content but also allows users to record shows, resembling the functionality of Sky Q. Additionally, it supports 4K resolution for superior image quality, four times sharper than standard HD.
While the starting price for the Freely set-top box may exceed £250, the absence of ongoing fees makes it a cost-effective choice in the long run, with all Freely content available for free viewing.
Although an exact release date for the new Freely boxes remains undisclosed, they are expected to hit stores soon. The disappearance of the online listing suggests a potential premature posting, indicating impending updates.
In a statement earlier this year, Jonathan Thompson, CEO of Everyone TV, emphasized the goal of making free TV accessible to all households. Introducing plug-and-stream devices is seen as a crucial step to expand the reach of the Freely platform, ensuring more homes can enjoy its offerings without requiring a TV upgrade or paid subscription.
Despite offering functionalities akin to Sky Glass, Sky Stream, and Sky Q, Freely lacks access to premium sports, movies, or boxsets from channels like Sky Atlantic or Sky Max. Additionally, it does not incorporate external services such as Netflix within the platform.
For access to premium content, individuals may consider subscribing to Sky’s plans, starting from £15 per month and often including access to Netflix.
