Kentucky Derby-Winning Jockey Injured in Fall

Date:

A jockey who previously won the Kentucky Derby is currently in intensive care due to sustaining multiple injuries from a fall at Churchill Downs. Brian Hernandez Jr achieved a significant milestone in 2024 by being just the eighth individual to triumph in both the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby, a feat not accomplished since 2009.

His victories included the Oaks with the renowned Thorpedo Anna, who later became the US Horse of the Year, and the Derby with Mystik Dan. While preparing for the upcoming Grade 2 Lukas Classic race, Hernandez, 39, was riding Mystik Dan at Churchill Downs on Sunday morning.

Unfortunately, during the third race that day, the jockey was thrown off when Sgt Garcia, the horse he was riding, suffered an injury on the far turn. Sgt Garcia was promptly attended to by equine medical staff, and Hernandez was swiftly transported to the University of Louisville Hospital for treatment.

Jamie, Hernandez’s wife, provided an update on Sunday night, acknowledging the overwhelming support and requesting continued prayers for her husband’s recovery. She detailed his injuries, which included seven broken ribs, a punctured lung, a lacerated liver with a repaired bleed, and ongoing monitoring for additional bleeding.

Highlighting the challenges of a jockey’s life, Jamie emphasized the physical and mental toll it takes and urged everyone to cherish their loved ones. Messages of support flooded in, with one individual commending Hernandez for his dedication to the sport and expressing hopes for his complete recovery.
