UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper pledges £142M aid to Ukraine

Date:

Yvette Cooper is set to affirm the United Kingdom’s steadfast backing for Ukraine during her current visit to the conflict-ridden nation. Making her inaugural journey as Foreign Secretary, Ms. Cooper has journeyed to Kyiv, where she plans to engage with President Zelenskyy and other top officials, along with Ukrainian citizens enduring Russia’s unlawful incursion.

The visit comes amidst heightened tensions following the downing of Russian drones by Poland and Nato for breaching Polish airspace early Wednesday. Additionally, it follows Russia’s most extensive air assault on Ukraine since the conflict’s onset, resulting in a significant strike on a crucial government edifice in Kyiv.

Ms. Cooper is scheduled to tour the damaged Cabinet of Ministers building and a residential structure demolished by Russia, where she will interact with affected families and children. During her trip, she disclosed a £142 million aid package from the UK to assist Ukraine through the upcoming winter and beyond. This funding includes £100 million earmarked for essential humanitarian aid to support civilians in frontline regions, safeguard vulnerable populations, and offer emergency relief to those impacted by Russia’s ongoing attacks.

The aid will encompass the restoration of critical water and heating systems, as well as initiatives to bolster livelihoods, employment opportunities, and enhance Ukrainian resilience amid the fourth winter of Russia’s unlawful war. The UK is also committing £40 million to revitalize Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which has suffered severe damage from Russia’s actions.

This financial commitment aligns with a pledge made earlier this year by Keir Starmer to aid Ukraine in its battle against Russia and assist civilians enduring Vladimir Putin’s harsh offensive. Ms. Cooper emphasized the critical importance of Ukraine’s security to the UK and stressed the enduring and strengthened UK support, recognizing the enduring threat posed by Russian aggression not only to Ukraine but to all of Europe and the UK.

In conjunction with her visit, she is scheduled to hold meetings with Ukrainian leaders including President Zelenskyy, Foreign Minister Sybiha, and Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko.
