Actor Maxine Peake has expressed disapproval towards public figures like J.K. Rowling and Nigel Farage for their comments in what she describes as a period of division. She recently shared her views while discussing the late ‘moral crusader’ Mary Whitehouse.
Maxine, aged 51, is set to portray the conservative activist Mary, recognized for her efforts against perceived ‘filth’ on television and her stance on sexuality, among other issues, in the play “The Last Stand of Mrs. Mary Whitehouse,” premiering at the Nottingham Playhouse tonight.
In anticipation of the premiere, Maxine, known for her roles in productions like “dinnerladies,” discussed her role on a radio show episode released yesterday, drawing parallels to contemporary public figures.
During an interview on BBC Radio 4’s Front Row regarding the upcoming play, Maxine was asked if there are similarities between Mary’s activism and today’s ‘culture wars.’ She affirmed this, stating, “Absolutely,” to host Samira Ahmed.
Maxine also expressed her belief that some celebrities speak on matters they may not fully comprehend, citing J.K. Rowling as an example, who has faced both praise and criticism for her statements regarding the trans community.
Referencing Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, particularly his controversial views on immigration, Maxine highlighted the divisive nature of his opinions during the conversation. She remarked, “But not only that. We’re looking at I think people like Farage, the far-right.”
Continuing, Maxine noted the persuasive charm of certain figureheads in current times, expressing concern over what she views as a potentially harmful ideology that can draw people in.
In response to Samira’s acknowledgment of differing opinions in debates, Maxine concurred, emphasizing the existing divisions in society. She stated, “Absolutely, y’know, but yeah … we are in … I think, yeah, we’re in very divisive times.”
