“Emmy Awards Make Prime Shift in 2027 Deal”

Date:

The upcoming Emmy Awards will make a significant shift to Prime Video starting in 2027, as part of a newly announced six-year partnership between Amazon and the Television Academy. This move marks the end of a longstanding tradition of broadcast networks airing the ceremony for over 70 years.

In recent years, streaming services have gained prominence in prestigious award categories at events like the Emmys. Since its inception in 1955, the awards show has been broadcast on one of the four major networks each year. However, the new agreement with Prime Video signifies a departure from the traditional “Wheel Deal” rotation among ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC.

The shift to Prime Video aims to bring continuity to the Emmy Awards, allowing for long-term planning and growth. According to Cris Abrego, chairman of the Television Academy, the transition to a single partner for the next six years will enable them to evolve and improve the awards show over time.

Unlike other exclusive streaming deals announced in the past, the agreement with Prime Video will immediately take effect, emphasizing the need for swift action and adaptation. Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, highlighted the urgency to move forward quickly in this new era.

In recent years, award shows have experienced a decline in viewership due to changing viewing habits. Despite this trend, the Emmys continue to showcase acclaimed programs, albeit with lower viewership numbers compared to other major award ceremonies. The partnership with Prime Video presents an opportunity to attract a wider audience and rejuvenate interest in the Emmys.

The Academy and Amazon believe that Prime Video’s platform can help increase viewership by offering a diverse range of Emmy-nominated content throughout the year. By leveraging their streaming capabilities, they aim to engage a younger audience and promote the Emmys as a must-watch event.

While acknowledging the significance of transitioning to streaming, Abrego emphasized that the essence of the awards lies in celebrating excellence in television content, regardless of the delivery method. The focus remains on recognizing outstanding contributions to the industry, irrespective of the platform.

Looking ahead, the Emmy Awards will continue to be held in September 2027, with the possibility of exploring alternative dates in the future. Abrego expressed openness to adjusting the schedule in collaboration with Amazon to ensure the event’s continued success.
