Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has initiated a probe into the potential use of harmful chemicals in children’s underwear by Fruit of the Loom and Hanes. Paxton issued investigative demands to both companies, expressing concerns about the chemicals’ impact on children’s well-being. While no allegations of misconduct were made, Fruit of the Loom and Berkshire Hathaway did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comments. Gildan, the parent company of Hanes, assured cooperation with the investigation, emphasizing adherence to strict manufacturing standards to meet industry regulations on chemical safety.
Paxton highlighted the shift towards synthetic materials like polyester and rayon in clothing production to cater to cost-conscious consumers. Research suggests that these fabrics can release microplastics, with chemicals such as bisphenols and phthalates linked to health risks like cancer and hormone disruption. PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals,” have been associated with various health concerns. Paxton stressed the importance of ensuring children’s products are free from toxic substances to safeguard their health.
In a separate inquiry earlier this year, Paxton probed Lululemon Athletica over the presence of “forever chemicals” in their activewear. The attorney general, a Republican candidate for a U.S. Senate seat against Democrat James Talarico, faces a challenging race in the upcoming midterm elections on November 3. This closely watched contest has drawn national attention due to its implications.
