“Explosion near German train station causes chaos”

Date:

An explosion close to a train station in Germany led to a temporary closure of the transport hub in the city of Augsburg on Wednesday morning. Police confirmed that a suspicious object found near the station was safe, and the station was reopened at 10 a.m., allowing train services to resume.

Authorities reported that an unidentified object exploded near the station around 3:15 a.m., resulting in minor injuries to a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man, both Ukrainian citizens. Following this incident, a second suspicious object was discovered at the main train station, prompting its closure at 8:30 a.m.

Explosives experts from the Bavarian state criminal police office were deployed to the scene to investigate. Police spokesperson Timo Küfner stated that it was too early to determine the motive behind the explosion but assured that investigations were ongoing.

The disruption caused by the incident impacted road traffic and public transportation near the station during the early morning hours. News reports suggested that the explosion occurred in front of a jewelry store, indicating that the train station was not the intended target.

Augsburg, located in Bavaria and home to approximately 308,000 residents, is situated about 78 kilometers northwest of Munich. This incident comes after the German government recently accused Russia of attempting an attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport using a drone loaded with explosives in the previous month, resulting in heightened tensions between the two nations.
