“Ottawa Launches Digital Transformation Canada”

Date:

Ottawa is set to introduce a new federal entity that will leverage digital technologies to enhance Canadians’ access to government services. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) issued a press release on Thursday unveiling the establishment of Digital Transformation Canada, aimed at improving how the government adopts and utilizes technology, among other key objectives.

The appointment of Patrick Pichette as the new CEO of Digital Transformation Canada was also announced by the PMO. Pichette, who previously served as Google’s chief financial officer from 2008 to 2015 and held executive roles at Bell Canada, McKinsey, and Spring Canada, brings extensive expertise in digital transformation, innovation, and organizational change to the initiative, as stated by Prime Minister Mark Carney.

According to the PMO, the newly formed agency will focus on implementing digital solutions like artificial intelligence across the government to streamline operations, reduce costs, enhance digital security, and promote Canadian tech firms’ growth. Carney highlighted the agency’s role in advancing the economy, benefiting Canadians, and positioning Canada as a digital leader by modernizing public service delivery and supporting local technology companies.

The release outlined that the agency will empower public servants with tools to streamline administrative processes, enhancing the efficiency of government service delivery. Additionally, it mentioned that federal funding will be allocated to assist Canadian AI and digital enterprises in testing, scaling, and bringing new technologies to market.

Digital Transformation Canada will operate under Minister of Government Transformation, Public Works, and Procurement Joël Lightbound’s oversight, integrating Shared Services Canada with elements of the Treasury Board Secretariat, Public Services and Procurement Canada, and Employment and Social Development Canada.
