“Jewish Entertainment Figures Rally Behind Mark Ruffalo”

Date:

Over 170 Jewish individuals in the entertainment industry, such as Hannah Einbinder, Joel Coen, and Canadian filmmaker Emma Seligman, have endorsed a public statement supporting American actor Mark Ruffalo against what they view as an unwarranted defamation campaign. The signatories, which include artists, writers, and faith leaders, conveyed a firm message to the public, urging an end to the ongoing situation.

The letter highlights the perceived unjust attacks on Ruffalo, accusing him of facing baseless allegations of antisemitism due to his opposition to Paramount Skydance’s potential acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery and his commentary linking the deal to the conflict in Gaza. Paramount Skydance, partially owned by CEO David Ellison and his father Larry Ellison of Oracle, has a known association with Israel, as an executive previously acknowledged sharing technology with the Israeli military.

Ruffalo has been under scrutiny by various parties, including Paramount, who criticized his use of terms like ‘genocide’ and ‘apartheid’ when discussing the merger, labeling them as inappropriate and offensive. A previous letter signed by over 1,000 Jewish industry members also condemned Ruffalo’s remarks for allegedly targeting Jewish executives with language rooted in historical antisemitic rhetoric.

The recent open letter of support for Ruffalo includes prominent figures like author Naomi Klein and physician Gabor Maté from Canada, as well as American actor Ilana Glazer and filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun. The signatories affirm their solidarity with Ruffalo and others who courageously speak out against perceived injustices.

In a separate incident, Ruffalo criticized the potential merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros., emphasizing Oracle’s involvement with the Israeli military. He raised concerns about the impact of such a merger on job losses, consumer prices, and industry competition. Paramount, which was recently acquired by Skydance, has faced opposition to the merger, with legal challenges citing antitrust issues.

Furthermore, Ruffalo’s remarks on the conflict in Gaza and Oracle’s support for Israel have sparked debates over the use of technology in the region. While some organizations have labeled Israel’s actions as genocide, the country has vehemently denied such accusations, asserting its actions are in self-defense against militants. Oracle’s public support for Israel, including donations to emergency services, has been a point of contention in the ongoing discussions surrounding the conflict.

The complex web of issues involving Ruffalo, Paramount, and the merger underscores the intersection of entertainment, politics, and ethical considerations that continue to shape industry dynamics and public discourse.
