“Unraveling the Mysteries of the Ocean Sunfish”

Date:

In the realm of marine life, the ocean sunfish stands out as a peculiar creature, defying conventional fish appearances with its massive, circular body, lack of a distinct tail, and oversized fins. Weighing up to two tonnes, this species, known as the Mola mola, is among the largest fish in the ocean and often overlooked for its unique traits.

Host Sarika Cullis-Suzuki explores the eccentricities of the ocean sunfish in a recent episode of The Nature of Things 101, showcasing its unconventional features to her co-host Anthony Morgan using a life-size model. Despite their impressive size and ability to swim to great depths multiple times a day in search of food, these fish are plagued by a variety of parasites due to their slow movement, large surface area, and traversing through different water zones.

The Mola mola has been found to harbor a staggering 73 parasite species, with some parasites themselves hosting secondary parasites. To combat this infestation, the sunfish employs unique tactics such as breaching out of the water and crashing back down, speculated to dislodge parasites. Additionally, they allow smaller fish and birds to feed on the parasites, aiding in their removal.

Despite existing knowledge about the ocean sunfish, there remains a wealth of information yet to be uncovered about this enigmatic species. Cullis-Suzuki emphasizes the need for further research and understanding to unravel the mysteries surrounding these captivating creatures.

For those intrigued by the ocean sunfish, the episode of The Nature of Things 101 is available for viewing on CBC Gem and The Nature of Things YouTube channel.
