The incident occurred on August 16, 2025, while Holly and her son Jahvai were in their North York residence. Gunshots were heard outside past midnight, causing Jahvai to be hit by a stray bullet while in bed, leading to his tragic death after being rushed to the hospital.
Subsequently, three young individuals were charged with first-degree murder by the police in the ensuing months. Despite the passage of a year, Roy continues to commemorate her son’s life and actively speak out against gun violence. Recently, she attended a ceremony in honor of her son’s life on Manitoulin Island, marking her first visit to his gravesite since his burial. During an interview on CBC Radio’s “Metro Morning,” Roy shared her struggle to come to terms with the finality of her son’s passing after months of attempting to cope and progress.
Reflecting on the past events, Roy mentioned feeling a sense of detachment from reality but acknowledged the harsh truth of her son’s death. She emphasized the profound impact the tragedy had on her personal identity. Following Jahvai’s untimely death, community members rallied together to demand stricter measures against gun violence, a cause that Roy has been actively championing, especially after her older son was involved in a shooting incident in 2019.
