The renowned calypso artist known as The Mighty Sparrow, credited with popularizing the genre globally since the 1950s, has passed away at the age of 91. Born Slinger Francisco, he peacefully departed in New York, surrounded by his loved ones, following a brief period of illness as confirmed by his family.
Hailing from Grand Roy, Grenada, Francisco migrated to Trinidad and Tobago with his family at a young age in 1937. His music ranged from lively carnival tunes to more topical and political compositions like “Model Nation,” “Martin Luther King For President,” and “Kennedy and Kruschev.”
Notably, The Mighty Sparrow celebrated Toronto’s Caribana festival in 1972 with “Toronto Mas” and revisited the city multiple times, including a special appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2014.
