Russian drone attacks on Kyiv and the surrounding region have continued for the fifth consecutive day, causing disruptions to daily life with constant air raid sirens sounding off. On Monday, the attacks resulted in injuries to four individuals and damage to various locations, including warehouse facilities, an apartment block, and a retail outlet in the Kyiv region, as reported by regional Governor Tymur Tkachenko on Telegram.
The ongoing onslaught of drones, many equipped with jet engines, has inflicted casualties, destroyed homes, and disrupted normalcy in Kyiv and nearby areas. A recent Russian drone strike on an ammunition depot led to fatal explosions, claiming the lives of 38 people.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed that the relentless drone attacks are intended to wear down the Ukrainian population. Within four days, Russia launched almost 1,500 drones at Ukraine, with over half of them being jet-powered, according to Zelenskiy.
Furthermore, a Russian strike caused a fire at a terminal operated by the private courier company Nova Poshta in the southern Odesa region, as confirmed by Governor Oleh Kiper. In Kryvyi Rih, a jet-powered drone attack on an industrial business left two people injured, as per a local official.
Both Ukraine and Russia have escalated attacks on economic targets in recent weeks, focusing on major e-commerce entities and retailers. Russia has targeted warehouses belonging to Ukraine’s prominent supermarket chains, leading postal service, and home-goods stores. In retaliation, Ukraine also targeted Russian infrastructure, with a logistics hub in Russia’s Yekaterinburg falling victim to a drone attack, as stated by the local governor.
Amidst the intensified air attacks by Russia, the lack of interceptors capable of downing ballistic missiles in Ukraine has been exploited. The increased use of daytime drone waves has created a new form of disruption for Kyiv residents, resulting in halts to the metro system and upheavals in daily routines.
Passengers in Kyiv, including individuals like nurse and psychologist Yulianna Oliynyk, have faced challenges due to the air raid alerts. Oliynyk, with her two sons, was stranded on a metro platform while attempting to reach a school before the academic year commenced, underscoring the impact of the ongoing conflict on civilians.
