Scientists have debated the warm-bloodedness of dinosaurs for a long time. Recently, researchers claim to have utilized chemistry to determine the body temperature of two T. rex specimens. Aradhna Tripati, a professor and geochemist at the University of California, Los Angeles, explained the challenging process of taking the temperature of extinct animals without physically measuring it.
Instead of traditional methods, scientists employed a chemical technique that detects temperature variations in hard tissues like tooth enamel and eggshells. By analyzing the isotopic composition of these materials, they could estimate the body temperature of dinosaurs, including T. rex. A decade ago, UCLA scientists used a similar approach on titanosaurs and oviraptors, concluding that they were warm-blooded.
In the case of the T. rex, researchers overcame the challenge of thin tooth enamel by refining their technique using megalodon teeth before analyzing samples from a young T. rex named Thomas. This analysis estimated the T. rex’s body temperature to be between 33.8°C and 38.8°C, comparable to large mammals like elephants and ostriches. This finding sheds light on the behavior and habitat range of these ancient creatures.
Experts like Anthony Fiorillo, a paleontologist, praised the study for providing compelling evidence of T. rex’s warmer body temperature. The implications of these findings extend to understanding how dinosaurs, including T. rex, adapted to different environments, such as the Arctic. While the study suggests T. rex could have been active throughout the day and night, there are ongoing debates about their metabolic rates compared to modern warm-blooded animals.
