Oyster Farming Crisis Hits P.E.I. Industry Hard
Kaila Richard, an oyster farmer in western P.E.I., reminisces about her late father while working on their family farm in Dock River, near Alberton. Alongside her husband Bruce, they have invested heavily in upgrading the farm with new equipment, but their efforts are now under threat due to two devastating diseases affecting the Island’s oyster industry.
The diseases, known as multinucleate sphere unknown (MSX) and dermo, were first detected in P.E.I. waters in 2024 and 2025, respectively. These parasites are harmless to humans but deadly to oysters, with some farmers witnessing up to 100% mortality rates.
The provincial and federal governments have introduced support programs, including financial aid, mental health support, and approval for importing disease-resistant oyster seed. However, the process of cultivating these seeds takes at least three years, posing uncertainties for the industry’s revival.
Farmers are urging for sustained financial support to weather the crisis. Bruce emphasized the urgent need for financial assistance to prevent long-term financial strain, as their farm had not received any promised funding at the time of his interview.
The devastating impact of the diseases has also affected wild oyster fishers, who are now facing increased costs and reduced harvests. The federal government’s offer of a buyback program for fishing licenses has raised concerns, with industry representatives suggesting alternative measures to support affected fishers.
Despite the challenges, there is a glimmer of hope with disease-resistant seed options to potentially revive the industry. Kaila and Bruce remain resilient, with Kaila expressing her determination to fight for their family business, which holds sentimental value due to her father’s legacy.
