Provincial police reported the death of a 22-year-old man following a motorcycle crash in Pickering, Ontario, during the early hours of Saturday morning. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) disclosed that the incident occurred on Highway 401 between Brock Road and Westney Road, with authorities responding to the scene just before 2:30 a.m.
The victim, a resident of Scarborough, tragically lost his life after crashing into an electronic sign board within a construction zone, as per an OPP social media post shared on Saturday. OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt mentioned in a video statement that the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed when the collision happened, leading to the man being thrown from the bike and sustaining fatal injuries.
Sgt. Schmidt confirmed that the man’s family has been informed of the tragic accident. The westbound lanes of Highway 401 near Westney Road and Brock Road had to be shut down for an extended period to facilitate the ongoing investigation, as previously indicated by the OPP in an earlier social media update.
In a subsequent announcement, the OPP informed that the affected roadway has since been reopened. Authorities have urged anyone with relevant information to reach out to the police for assistance.
