“Dina Asher-Smith Wins 200m National Title, Returns to London”

Date:

Dina Asher-Smith narrowly beat Amy Hunt in a close finish to secure the 200m national title, announcing her permanent move back to London. The fastest woman in Britain set a new championship record of 22.14 seconds in windy Birmingham, attributing her recent success to the familiar surroundings of her London home after returning from an 18-month training period in Texas with coach Edrick Floreal.

Asher-Smith prefers to keep her current support network private until after the upcoming World Championships to maintain focus on her preparations without distractions. She expressed her contentment with being in an environment that allows open discussions and promotes her well-being and performance, emphasizing the importance of a conducive setting for her athletic endeavors.

Confirming her participation in multiple events in Japan, Asher-Smith confidently stated her readiness for a shot at a medal. Meanwhile, Zharnel Hughes set a new championship record of 19.9 seconds in the men’s 200m event, adding to his earlier gold win. Josh Kerr showcased his dominance in the 5000m race, accelerating in the final kilometer after a slow start.

Georgia Hunter Bell clinched the 800m title, solidifying her decision to compete in both the 800m and 1500m races in Tokyo. Her race plans will be finalized after the Lausanne Diamond League event on August 20, where she will face Keely Hodgkinson, her training partner and the Olympic 800m champion. Hunter Bell acknowledged Hodgkinson’s talent and expressed anticipation for their upcoming race, aiming to test her skills against a strong competitor.
