“Waterloo Researcher Wins Ig Nobel for Anti-Splash Urinal Design”

Date:

University of Waterloo doctoral candidate Kaveeshan Thurairajah recently received an Ig Nobel Prize, a lighthearted counterpart to the prestigious Nobel Prizes, which honors unconventional and imaginative academic research endeavors. Thurairajah and his team were awarded the Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their work on creating a urinal design that minimizes splashing.

Their project involved constructing and testing various urinal prototypes, such as the Nautilus and Cornucopia designs, to identify the most effective and easiest-to-clean model. During the awards ceremony in Zurich, Thurairajah and his team donned bright yellow raincoats, embracing the quirky spirit of the event.

Despite the humorous nature of their research, Thurairajah emphasized the practical implications of their work in enhancing public restroom facilities. The study, which was published in the journal PNAS Nexus, aimed to make bathrooms and public spaces more appealing and user-friendly.

In addition to Thurairajah’s team, Canadian researchers from the University of Toronto and McGill University were also recognized at the ceremony. The University of Toronto group received the Economics Prize for their study on unethical behavior among affluent individuals, while McGill University scientists were part of the team honored with the Technology Prize for their innovative use of mosquito proboscises in 3D printing.

The Ig Nobel Awards, organized by the Annals of Improbable Research, have relocated to Europe after being held in the United States for 35 years due to visa-related concerns. Thurairajah, who collaborated with researchers from various countries on the urinal project, highlighted the importance of international cooperation in the scientific community and expressed support for the venue change to ensure global participation in the event.
