Tennessee plans to rename Nashville International Airport in honor of the late country music legend Dolly Parton, as announced on Friday. The decision follows a social media campaign by fans advocating for the airport to be dedicated to Parton. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee discussed the renaming with Parton’s team, stating that Parton’s impact on the state makes it fitting for the airport to bear her name and embody the enduring legacy of her music, generosity, faith, and kindness.
The proposal to rename the airport will be reviewed at a meeting on Sept. 17, as the current policy of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority requires a two-year period after an individual’s passing before naming any property in their honor. The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development supports the renaming, recognizing Parton as a significant figure in promoting Tennessee’s tourism and cultural heritage.
