A recent United Nations investigation expressed concern over alleged mistreatment of a well-known Palestinian physician detained by the Israeli military in Gaza since December 2024. The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory urged the immediate release of Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza.
Reports from rights groups and Abu Safiya’s lawyer suggest that his life is at risk and he is being held without charges. Physicians for Human Rights Israel stated that his health condition is deteriorating due to the treatment by Israeli Prison Service guards.
The Israel Prison Service denied the allegations, calling them false and baseless. Despite not mentioning Abu Safiya by name, they refuted claims of mistreatment of him and other medical professionals in prison.
In a separate development, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention labeled Israel’s detention of Abu Safiya as arbitrary and demanded his immediate release, citing violations of human rights declarations and treaties.
Simultaneously, deadly Israeli airstrikes and gunfire claimed the lives of at least nine Palestinians, including two children, in Gaza. The Israeli military confirmed strikes targeting militants but denied knowledge of civilian casualties.
Since a ceasefire agreement last October, Israel has conducted numerous strikes in Gaza, citing security threats from militants. The situation has escalated, with both Hamas and Israel accusing each other of violating the ceasefire agreement.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in over 1,070 Palestinian and four Israeli soldier fatalities in Gaza within the past nine months, highlighting the continued tensions and violence in the region.
