U.S. Vice-President JD Vance shared his perspective on the recent trade agreement with Canada during a fundraising event on Wednesday. He mentioned that Prime Minister Mark Carney attempted to appear tougher than U.S. President Donald Trump, while acknowledging the support of his longtime friend, Conservative MP Jamil Jivani, in advocating for Canada.
At the private gathering in Southampton, N.Y., Vance described Carney as a “very amiable person” with whom he has a good relationship. However, Vance pointed out that Carney sometimes tries to project strength by challenging Trump, despite making concessions on various issues.
Vance highlighted the role of Jivani, referring to him as a “random MP” who has effectively supported Canada behind the scenes due to his positive rapport with the U.S. administration. He also downplayed Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s influence in the trade negotiations, labeling him as a minor player.
Regarding the trade discussions, Vance emphasized that the U.S. aims to influence Canada’s behavior and secure favorable outcomes for the country. He noted the evolving dynamics in the Canada-U.S. relationship under Trump’s administration, marked by tariff threats and shifting policies.
The recent agreement, which temporarily averted new tariffs on Canadian goods, followed intense bilateral talks and a call between Trump and Carney. Trump expressed satisfaction with the deal, emphasizing positive relations with Canadian leadership.
Reports indicate that the trade deal involves reductions in U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and cars, with Canada urged to restore American alcohol products to store shelves. The specifics of Canada’s concessions remain undisclosed, although Trump suggested beneficial terms for American farmers.
As the deadline for finalizing the agreement approaches, Canadian Minister Dominic LeBlanc is engaging in discussions with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Vance highlighted the involvement of key negotiators and his personal engagement due to his connection with Jivani.
Jivani’s active role in the negotiations has garnered attention, with Vance noting his discreet contributions in seeking mutually beneficial resolutions, particularly on energy and automotive tariffs.
