Marie Burge, who dedicated her life to advocating for the people of Prince Edward Island, passed away at the age of 88 in palliative care in Charlottetown. Known for her commitment to various causes such as workers’ rights and land protection, Burge co-founded the Cooper Institute in 1984, a non-profit organization focusing on research, education, and community development.
A close friend and colleague, Joe Byrne, praised Burge for her ability to inspire others to see things from a fresh perspective and embrace change. Before her involvement with the Cooper Institute, Burge made significant contributions to the community by teaching at Kinkora High School and participating in the Latin American Mission Program in the Dominican Republic, where she and a friend, Sister Teresa Currie, protected a young man from death squads.
Returning from the mission, Burge was transformed, driven to support marginalized groups and address societal issues. She was described as a fearless leader who had a magnetic effect on bringing people together for positive change. Burge was a strong advocate for a basic income guarantee in P.E.I., believing in creating inclusive systems for the benefit of all.
Throughout her life, Burge received several accolades, including the Order of P.E.I. and various medals. She played a pivotal role in advocating for land and water rights as a founding member of the Coalition for the Protection of P.E.I. Lands, and she supported the National Farmers Union and the P.E.I. Working Group for a Livable Income.
Despite her impactful work, Burge remained humble and always attributed the progress to collective efforts rather than individual achievements. Her sense of humor and positive outlook endeared her to many, with friends recalling her constant laughter and unwavering commitment to community well-being.
P.E.I.’s New Democratic Party paid tribute to Burge, emphasizing her enduring passion for social justice and community empowerment. Her legacy of advocating for a fair and inclusive society will be deeply missed, as she inspired others to believe in their capacity to effect positive change.
