“UK Begins 3G Shutdown: Impact on Phone Users”

Date:

A significant transition is underway this year that may impact some individuals’ access to data on their devices. The UK is gradually phasing out its 3G service in favor of faster and more reliable 4G and 5G networks. UK telecom companies such as EE, Vodafone, and now O2 have already deactivated their 3G services.

While most users will not experience any disruptions, certain older and more vulnerable customers may face phone service interruptions if they have not upgraded to newer devices that do not rely on 3G connectivity.

This change raises concerns as many people rely on their phones to stay connected with loved ones.

Virgin Media O2 has partnered with Age UK to raise awareness about the UK’s 3G shutdown to provide assistance to those affected by the transition.

According to Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK, the 3G phase-out may be daunting for many older individuals, emphasizing the importance of supporting those impacted by the change.

O2 is scheduled to complete the shutdown of its 3G service by the end of the year, affecting users with devices that are not 4G or 5G compatible, restricting access to services like WhatsApp.

The 3G shutdown has commenced, starting with O2 deactivating the service in Durham, followed by Norwich, Telford, and Guildford. Torquay is next in line before the complete network shutdown by year-end.

Virgin Media O2 and Age UK are collaborating to provide additional support to older mobile phone users needing to upgrade their devices to maintain mobile data access post-3G shutdown.

Age UK will assist disadvantaged older individuals through in-person awareness sessions, extending support to older customers and users of network providers like Giffgaff, Tesco Mobile, and Sky Mobile piggybacking on the O2 network.

To determine if they are affected, Virgin Media O2 is directly contacting customers without 4G or 5G handsets, offering free compatible devices to vulnerable customers and discounts on new devices for others.

For users with 3G-only phones, these devices will still support 2G networks after the shutdown, enabling voice calls and text message functionality to continue.

Virgin Media O2 assures that the impact of the transition will be minimal, as less than 2% of network data traffic runs on its 3G network.

Caroline Abrahams from Age UK encourages anyone feeling concerned to contact their provider for guidance on preparing for the change or reach out to Age UK’s Advice Line at 0800 169 65 65 for support.
