Lewis Hamilton expressed surprise at his rare crash during the Dutch Grand Prix, where he lost control of his Ferrari at a banked corner. The incident occurred as rain fell, causing his car to understeer onto a painted section off the track, resulting in a collision with the barrier and the snapping off of his front-right wheel.
During an interview with Sky Sports, Hamilton refrained from attributing a definitive cause to the crash, mentioning the loss of grip as he maneuvered the corner. Despite the mishap, Hamilton was content with his car’s performance, having improved from his 12th-place finish in the previous race to running seventh before the crash, closely trailing George Russell in a Mercedes.
The untimely crash also affected Hamilton’s teammate Charles Leclerc, who had just pitted for fresh tires when the incident occurred, allowing others to change tires with minimal time loss behind the safety car. This led to a heated battle between Russell and Leclerc, culminating in the latter overtaking the Mercedes by cutting a corner, prompting an investigation by race stewards post-race.
If Leclerc incurs a penalty, it will be enforced at the next race in Monza. Additionally, Leclerc’s race ended abruptly when he was involved in a collision with Kimi Antonelli.
In a separate incident, a rookie mistake by a Mercedes driver caused a collision with Leclerc at turn three, resulting in significant damage to the Ferrari. The impact led to Leclerc retiring from the race, visibly disappointed with the outcome.
