An individual from Annapolis Valley is accused of attempted murder and various weapons offenses following a shooting incident involving a woman known to the suspect, who sustained severe injuries and was promptly taken to the hospital. Ryan Alexander Cole, aged 36, appeared briefly in Nova Scotia Provincial Court on Monday and his case was adjourned until August 25. He is currently in custody.
The incident unfolded on Saturday morning in South Farmington, Annapolis Valley, triggering a police response to a reported shooting. The suspected perpetrator fled the scene in a damaged Mazda sedan, heading towards Halifax. Law enforcement pursued the vehicle, making multiple attempts to halt it, including deploying a spike belt on the highway. Despite evading the deflation device, the suspect was eventually located from the air after the Mazda collided with a tree along a hiking trail behind a Bedford shopping mall in Halifax.
Following the collision, the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, prompting the RCMP to issue an alert. Mandy Edwards, RCMP Cpl., highlighted the public safety risks associated with dealing with an individual suspected of possessing a firearm. Initially, a localized alert was issued for the Bedford area where the collision occurred. Subsequently, an emergency alert was broadcast to all residents in HRM upon realizing that the suspect had not been apprehended and could have moved further within the vicinity.
The arrest operation involved police dog teams from the RCMP and Halifax Regional Police, alongside emergency response units from both agencies. While confirming a connection between Cole and the victim, authorities did not disclose the precise nature of their relationship. Cole has a significant criminal history dating back to 2008, encompassing various charges such as breaching release conditions, disarming a police officer, resisting arrest, and sharing intimate images without consent.
