In January, Frosty the horse was rescued from a near-death situation when he was discovered partially submerged in a frozen creek in Cochin, Sask. Thanks to the assistance of local communities and horse enthusiasts nationwide, Frosty has made a remarkable recovery and is now adapting well to his new environment.
A resident found Frosty trapped in Lehman Creek, and with the help of the village’s mayor, Mark Pattinson, and his friend Ed Scott, the horse was successfully rescued. Despite Frosty’s poor condition upon being freed from the frozen water, he displayed resilience by standing up and walking to a maintenance shop for assistance.
Following the passing of Frosty’s owner, the horse required urgent medical attention. After several failed attempts to find a caregiver among local horse owners, Leslie-Ann Smith, a local farmer, finally stepped in to help. Frosty was in a dire state, emaciated and covered in ice, requiring immediate veterinary care for his injuries.
Under the care of Smith and her husband, Frosty underwent extensive treatment at Lakeland Veterinary Service for a week. His recovery process involved multiple therapies and frequent visits to the veterinarian due to his significant injuries, including a hernia resulting from his ordeal in the frozen creek.
Despite the costly treatments, donations poured in from across the country, facilitated by Smith sharing Frosty’s story on social media. The support from various individuals and organizations helped cover Frosty’s medical expenses, highlighting the community’s compassion for animals in need.
After seven months, Frosty has transformed from a withdrawn, antisocial horse to a loving and sociable companion at the Smith farm. He now interacts well with other horses and humans, displaying a gentle and affectionate demeanor. Frosty recently made a public appearance at the Tony Cote Summer Games and horse relay, where his resilient spirit and remarkable recovery touched many hearts.
Smith emphasized the importance of perseverance and compassion in Frosty’s journey, emphasizing the role of collective effort and the horse’s determination to survive. Frosty’s story serves as a testament to the strength and resilience found in both animals and humans, showcasing the power of empathy and unity in overcoming challenges.
