“Sister Caregiver Shares Journey with Autistic Brother”

Date:

Simone Abrahamsohn, a resident of Toronto, shared her experience of balancing the role of being her older brother’s primary caregiver after the passing of their mother. Living with her neurodivergent brother, Stuart, who is autistic and a left-brain stem stroke survivor, presents unique challenges but also moments of joy. Stuart requires assistance with daily activities like feeding, transfers, and personal care due to his physical and emotional needs, including sensitivity to loud noises.

Reflecting on their childhood, Simone recalled feeling embarrassed by Stuart’s behaviors, such as stimming and talking to himself, which were misunderstood by others. She acknowledged her own struggles with ADHD and the effort she put into masking her neurodivergent traits to fit in with societal expectations. Despite the challenges, Simone strives to create a supportive and inclusive living environment for both herself and Stuart, acknowledging the need for patience and understanding in their sibling relationship.

Simone emphasized the importance of being present for Stuart and involving him in decision-making processes to empower him. While adjusting her lifestyle to accommodate Stuart’s needs, she expressed a sense of fulfillment in their shared journey as roommates. Despite sacrificing personal pursuits like acting classes, Simone finds purpose in nurturing their relationship and embracing the opportunity to be a better sibling to Stuart in their adulthood.

Through their co-habiting experience as middle-aged siblings, Simone is determined to make the most of this second chance to support and advocate for Stuart, fostering a deeper connection and mutual understanding between them in their shared home.
