“Researchers Study Harm Reduction at Summer Music Festivals”

Date:

Summer music festivals have long been venues where individuals opt to consume psychedelics and other substances. A team of researchers is investigating the implementation of harm reduction practices at these events to draw valuable insights. Erika Dyck, a history professor at the University of Saskatchewan and a Canada Research Chair in the history of health and social justice, has dedicated the past twenty years to studying psychedelics.

Dyck highlighted that music festivals, being common settings for substance use, often serve as platforms for harm reduction initiatives. Kenneth Tupper, an adjunct professor at the School of Population and Public Health at the University of British Columbia, is also involved in this research endeavor. He noted that drug checking procedures originated in Canada through music festivals amid the toxic drug crisis, particularly in British Columbia.

The British Columbia Centre on Substance Use introduced a portable FTIR spectrometer around 2017 for drug testing at festivals like Shambhala and Bass Coast. The inaugural edition of the Regina Exchange Folk Festival prioritized harm reduction and safety measures, including the presence of the Nēwo Yōtina Friendship Centre with a naloxone station for potential overdoses.

Tupper emphasized that drug testing services offer individuals clarity before making decisions about drug use, potentially saving lives. Additionally, counseling services can assist individuals in navigating their experiences. Dyck underscored that the research project aims to document the harm reduction strategies employed at festivals to contribute to a valuable repository of knowledge for future reference.
