“Deadliest Ebola Outbreak in DRC History: 2,325 Deaths”

Date:

The latest data from the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo revealed that the Ebola outbreak has resulted in the deaths of 2,325 individuals, making it the deadliest outbreak in the country’s history, surpassing the toll from the 2018-2020 outbreak. According to the country’s public health institute, the number of confirmed cases has now reached 4,945, with 101 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. This outbreak, the 17th in the country, has already become the largest in terms of case numbers, a record achieved in late July.

The most recent government figures indicate that the total death toll has exceeded the 2,299 fatalities recorded in the DRC’s previous worst outbreak from 2018-2020. The current outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo species of Ebola, does not have any approved vaccines or treatments. Since its declaration on May 15, the outbreak has intensified due to challenges such as weak health infrastructure, community resistance, and instability, hindering the identification and response to cases.

The case fatality ratio, which represents the proportion of deaths after confirmed infections, has risen from around 20% in early June to 46%, indicating that nearly half of the confirmed cases are now fatal. However, experts suggest that this increase does not imply that the virus has become more lethal but rather highlights ongoing deficiencies in surveillance, case detection, and access to care.

Despite ongoing efforts to contain the outbreak, including the evaluation of experimental vaccines and therapies, the situation remains critical. The outbreak, which can be transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals, can lead to symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and potentially fatal internal and external bleeding.
