Millions of households in the UK are set to benefit from a £150 reduction on their electricity bills this winter through the annual Warm Home Discount scheme, with numerous energy suppliers participating in the initiative.
The Warm Home Discount program is now open, offering a direct £150 discount on electricity bills, which is processed through the energy supplier rather than as a cash payment directly to the individual’s bank account.
Participating energy suppliers for the Warm Home Discount scheme include those listed on the official program.
To qualify for the Warm Home Discount, individuals must be receiving specific benefits on the qualifying date, which for this year is August 24. Residents in England and Wales automatically receive the discount, while in Scotland, automatic eligibility is linked to receiving the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit.
For other eligible benefits, individuals must apply manually by contacting their energy supplier. Notably, the Warm Home Discount scheme is not available in Northern Ireland.
This news comes as energy bills are expected to rise slightly in January, with the Ofgem price cap increasing from £1,755 to £1,758 for a typical dual fuel household paying by direct debit. The price cap will be effective until March 31, subject to further updates.
While there is a cap on the maximum amount that can be charged for energy, actual bills are calculated based on individual gas and electricity usage. The Ofgem price cap regulates charges for gas and electricity units, as well as fixed daily standing charges for energy network connection.
The price cap estimate reflects the annual cost for an average household consuming 2,700 kWh of electricity and 11,500 kWh of gas over a year.
