In our society, it has become all too common to overlook the harsh reality faced by many families. Children growing up in cramped living spaces, sharing meals on a bed due to the lack of a proper table, sharing facilities with strangers, and witnessing their parents’ anxiety about where they will sleep next month – this is the stark truth that we cannot ignore.
While some may label it as a housing crisis, the term “crisis” implies a sudden occurrence. What we are observing is a long-standing failure that has been allowed to fester in plain view.
Having personally visited such living conditions and met affected families, I have seen firsthand the dire circumstances they endure. Mold creeping up walls, living out of bags, enduring constant leaks, and lacking basic furniture are just a glimpse of the hardships they face. Children expressing embarrassment about inviting friends over, fearing judgment based on their living situation, is heartbreaking.
Every time I hear these stories, the same question echoes in my mind: How did we reach this point of desperation?
Simply attributing the situation to a strained system or shifting blame to authorities, councils, or financial constraints is not enough. Behind every excuse lies a child who will wake up this Christmas in unsuitable accommodations. While the nation revels in festive cheer, thousands of young individuals will find themselves in makeshift living spaces like converted offices, bed and breakfasts, hostels, and so-called temporary flats that offer no real sense of security or stability.
Motivated by the urgency of the situation, I initiated the GoFundMe campaign “172,000 Reasons to Give.” I refuse to stand idly by as children facing homelessness are forgotten during a time when generosity is most prevalent. Through this campaign, every donation, minus transaction fees, directly benefits children in need through gift cards, allowing parents to choose thoughtful and personal gifts for their kids without delays or bureaucratic hurdles.
Collaborating with schools in high homelessness areas ensures that the support reaches those who need it the most. A modest donation of £30 can provide a significant gift for a child living in temporary accommodations, symbolizing that someone cares enough to ensure they are not overlooked during the holiday season.
Beyond the material gifts, this campaign is a statement of solidarity, a refusal to turn a blind eye to the normalization of intolerable living conditions. If we cannot guarantee every child a safe and stable home, the least we can do is reaffirm their worth and significance.
For those willing to contribute, either through donations or by spreading awareness of the campaign, every action makes a tangible impact. With 172,000 reasons prompting action, it only takes one individual to initiate change.
