A tragic incident unfolded as a well-known Brazilian social media personality passed away following a celebration where she and her guests reportedly consumed homemade whiskey tainted with methanol at her 26th birthday event.
Yasmim Ângela Feitosa de Souza, an Instagram comedian with a substantial following, commemorated her birthday in her hometown of Petrolina in eastern Brazil. The fatal drink was acquired by de Souza and her partner from a rural village near São Bento do Una city, where they shared it with a friend during the Monday night festivity.
According to de Souza’s mother, they consumed approximately one and a half liters of the whiskey. While her boyfriend felt unwell the next day, de Souza appeared cheerful and interactive until she began feeling ill that evening, succumbing to the suspected poisoning.
Both de Souza’s boyfriend and the friend who joined them in drinking the whiskey were rushed to the hospital due to suspected methanol poisoning. Their current condition remains uncertain as of the latest reports.
The investigation into de Souza’s sudden demise is currently in progress. Methanol, a colorless liquid commonly used in various industrial applications, is known to be highly toxic to humans, often causing severe health complications and even death when ingested. Symptoms of methanol poisoning can range from nausea and abdominal pain to visual impairment and unconsciousness.
Authorities have seized the remaining whiskey for testing, while the influencer’s funeral has already taken place in Petrolina. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with consuming adulterated substances.
