“60-Year-Old Mother Thwarts ‘Hi Mum’ Scam, Avoids £1,600 Fraud”

Date:

Nicky, a 60-year-old mother, fell prey to a deceptive text scam where the fraudster posed as her daughter, AJ, requesting £1,600 for an urgent bill payment. The scammer claimed AJ had damaged her phone and needed immediate financial assistance. Fortunately, Nicky recognized the scam before sending any money.

The fraudulent tactic, known as the “Hi Mum” scam, involves fraudsters impersonating a victim’s child on an unknown number to solicit money under false pretenses. Nicky, a finance professional from Halifax, West Yorkshire, shared her experience, revealing that subtle clues in the messages raised suspicion.

After engaging in conversation with the scammer, Nicky noticed discrepancies in the language and behavior that differed from her daughter’s usual communication style. By verifying the situation with her real daughter over the phone, Nicky confirmed the scam and avoided becoming a victim.

Recent research by Santander indicates that impersonation scams, like the one Nicky encountered, resulted in significant financial losses totaling £1,172,212 between April and June. Scammers frequently target older individuals, with sons and daughters being the most impersonated, leading to substantial financial losses.

Nicky emphasized the importance of staying vigilant against such scams and encouraged reporting any suspicious activity to authorities. Santander provided warning signs to identify potential scammers and advised immediate action in case of suspected fraud to protect personal information and finances.
